Want a helping hand with that pesky odd job or house chore you simply don’t have the time or energy to do? A local effort linking community members with high school students hopes to provide the answer.

Dr. Lou Rossi, a local chiropractor and owner of Centerpointe Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, has clients who are Medina High School athletes. “In talking with these athletes the common theme was the struggle many were voicing in finding a way to fund the pay to play fees,” Dr. Rossi said.

Depending on the high school grade, Medina’s pay to participate fees can range upwards of $660 per sport, per season. Due to financial constraints as the result of levy failures, the Board of Education instituted the pay to participate fees. 

The idea of linking local individuals or businesses, who need small jobs completed, with high school athletes willing to make some money was born and named, Medina Work to Play. A newly launched website, www.medinaworktoplay.com provides the medium for those wishing to submit a small job such as babysitting, dog sitting car washing or yard work, to name a few.  

Dr. Rossi recently brought the groundwork for the idea to the Medina Athletic Boosters May meeting. The Boosters, with communication access through website and email distribution, agreed to assist in marketing the program to the Medina community and athletes. 

The program, administered by the school district’s Athletic Department, will link the job request with available students. Interested students are invited to fill out a form and submit it to the Athletic Department office. Click here to download the student request form. 

Athletic Director Jeff Harrison explains that interested high school students will be given the option to take an assigned job as they are received. The student will then contact the employer, receive details about the job and make arrangements. “Getting the word out to interested student athletes and interested community members is the key right now,” said Harrison, noting that Medina coaches are assisting with this as well.  

“Some students are already taking advantage of the program and making headway into paying for a fall sport,” Harrison noted.
